Davor Babić (LEGS ’99) is an associate professor of private international law, arbitration and ADR at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Law, where he formerly also served as vice-dean. He studied law at the University of Zagreb (LL.B., Ph.D.), Asser Institute, the Hague (Asser College Europe) and at CEU (LL.M., IBL). He has published on a wide range of topics relating to private international law, arbitration, other forms of alternative dispute resolutions, and international investment law.
He has had a leading role in Croatia’s negotiation on accession to the European Union presiding over a working group responsible for harmonization of Croatian law with internal market legislation in the field of company law, auditing and accounting.
Professor Babić has a rich experience as an international commercial arbitrator. He served as chair, sole arbitrator or co-arbitrator under various institutional and ad hoc arbitration rules (including ICC Rules, LCIA Rules, UNCITRAL Rules) in different seats of arbitration (including London, Paris and Frankfurt).
He also thought a course on EU Private International Law at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in the wither semester of 2012 hosted by Prof. Ronald Brand, a leading U.S. scholar in the field of private international law and head of Pitt Law’s Center for International Legal Education.
Djordje Gardašević is an assistant professor at the Constitutional Law Department of the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb since 2005, after having worked as the teaching assistant at the General Theory of Law and State Department at the same institution (1999-2005).
Graduated (LL.B.) at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb in 1998; received the LL.M. degree at the Central European University in Budapest in 2000; defended the doctoral thesis at the faculty of Law in Zagreb in 2010. The title of his doctoral thesis is “Restrictions of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in States of Emergency”.
His scientific research focuses primarily on states of emergency, fundamental rights and constitutional law theory, although he has also written on the issues of governmental transparency, political parties, elections financing as well as free access to information.
His international experience, among other things, includes participation at the VII World Congress of the International Association for Constitutional law (Athens), cooperation with the European Public Law Centre (Athens) and Central European Political Studies Association (Bratislava), as well as participation in a number of courses (2000-) organized by the Inter-University Centre in Dubrovnik (in cooperation with the CEU and the Zagreb Law Faculty).
In Croatia, in the past several years, he has been working with the Transparency International Croatia, Croatian Helsinki Committee, GONG and a number of governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations.
He is a member of the Croatian Association for Constitutional Law, the Croatian Academy of Legal Sciences, vice-president of the European Election Law Association and secretary of the Zagreb Law Faculty Alumni Association.
Viktor Gotovac is an assistant professor of labour and social security law at Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb. He studied law at Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb (LL.B. and S.J.D.), Asser Institute and Legal Studies Department, Central European University (LL.M., CCL). He has published on a wide range of topics relating to labour and social security law, conciliation and right to free access to information.
Alongside the development of his academic career he has acted as expert and consultant to several projects. He has advised the rapporteur on opinion of the European Economic and Social Council “Republic of Croatia on the Way for Accession,”
He is a member of Administrative Board of Centre for Democracy and Law “Miko Tripalo” and several professional associations, boards and committees as well as of several work-groups for drafting legislation and co-author of several draft proposals of statutory and sub-statutory normative texts. Conducted conciliations and facilitations.
He is also chairperson of the Supervisory Board of Croatian Radio-Television and chairperson of the Ethical Committee of INA Group (national oil company); member of assembly of Zagreb Holding L.L.C. (municipal services company), member of Croatian Parliament Special Committee – National Council for Monitoring Anti-Corruption Strategy Implementation, as well as member of Croatian Parliament Committee for Labour, Retirement System and Social Partnership and member of Committee for Determination of Representativity.
After earning her LL.M. Degree (Distinction) in International Business Law at the CEU (IBL 2001/2002), Nina Gumzej became a trainee in the judiciary, passed the bar exam and joined the largest Croatian telecommunications company where she spent seven years, mostly working on novel data and privacy protection challenges.
She was also the first company-appointed Data Protection Officer for two and half years.
During this time she was also completing her Ph.D. thesis and due to her expertise lectured as an invited lecturer at the Zagreb Law Faculty Chair of Legal Informatics and at the Zagreb University postgraduate interdisciplinary specialist studies on electronic communications market regulation.
In 2011, Nina earned her Ph.D. degree at the Zagreb University (Doctoral Thesis title: “Data protection in electronic communications”) and in 2012 joined the Zagreb Law Faculty with her current position being Senior Assistant – Lecturer at the Chair of Legal Informatics.
Her recent research focus in publications and presentations at conferences, workshops and other events focuses on Croatian and EU data protection as well as e-privacy legal-regulatory frameworks and relevant Council of Europe activities; legal-regulatory analyses in the areas of cloud computing, technology of identification through radio-frequency and the Internet of things, data-driven innovation (Big Data); communications secrecy, business secret protection and confidentiality contracts; role and liability of Internet intermediaries with respect to online file-sharing and copyright violations.
She is a member of the Editorial Board of the international journal “Juridical Tribune” (Law Department of the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies) and member of the Scientific Committee of the international conference “Perspectives of Business Law in the Third Millennium” (organized by the Law Department of Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies and the Society of Juridical and Administrative Sciences in Bucharest).
As a representative of the academic community she was recently selected to join the Young Leaders Program supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology Foundation.
Nina Tepeš (LEGS '00) is an associate professor of commercial and company Law at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Law. She studied law at the University of Zagreb (LL.B., Ph.D.), Asser Institute, the Hague (Postgraduate Course on European Law, WTO Law, International Commercial Arbitration and International Business Law at the Asser College Europe) and at CEU (LL.M., IBL). Her interests also include international dispute settlement and international commercial law.
She actively participated in Croatia's accession negotiations to the European Union in the field of consumer and health protection.
She has published on a range of topics relating to private international law, arbitration, ADR, commercial and company law. Professor Tepeš served as an arbitrator in a number of arbitral proceeding and also has an experience as a mediator.
